Bio
---------------
The Video Game Pianist is one of the first pianists to gain recognition and respect from
people around the world and the top professionals of the interactive entertainment
industry for performing video game music on the piano. The Video Game Pianist
persona started when a video of himself performing Super Mario songs on the piano
appeared on the main page Ebaum’s World on July 2, 2004, making him an internet
celebrity overnight. The beauty of the internet allowed the video to be spread rapidly to
other joke and humor sites (such as Gprime.net, Muchosucko.com, and College
Humor.com), be viewed by millions of people around the world on their computers, and
be discussed in thousands of forums, blogs, and chat rooms. News about the Video
Game Pianist was featured on Excite.co.jp, HOT 104.7 FM, Z103 FM, “Night Life
Montreal”, “GAME Magazine”, “CUBE Magazine”, “The Observer”, and others.
In February of 2005, Tommy Tallarico, considered to be one of the most successful video
game composers in history, was so impressed after seeing the Super Mario piano video
on Gprime.net that he immediately contacted the Video Game Pianist, and the two
became friends. Tommy Tallarico invited the Video Game Pianist to the Game
Developers Conference in San Francisco to perform at Walk of Game and the G.A.N.G.
Awards. There, the performances of music from Sonic the Hedgehog, the Legend of
Zelda, Halo 2, Earthworm Jim, and Super Mario were a special occasion; it was the first
time the Video Game Pianist performed video game music to a live audience since the
inception of the Super Mario piano video on the Ebaum’s World. Recently, he was also
invited by BradyGAMES to play piano live at the E3 Expo in Los Angeles.
As well as performing video game music, the Video Game Pianist, known in real life as
Martin Leung, also plays classical music. He is currently a freshman at the Cleveland
Institute of Music pursuing his Bachelor’s of Music degree. His piano teacher is Paul
Schenly.
Martin Leung is the First Prize winner of the 2004 Los Angeles Philharmonic Bronislaw
Kaper Awards for Young Artists and a Second Prize winner in the Darius Milhaud
Performance Auditions organized and sponsored by the Darius Milhaud Society. He is a
National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts laureate of Florida’s ARTS Week
2004. He made his Carnegie Hall Isaac Stern Auditorium debut at the 2003 New York
Youth Orchestra Festival and later soloed with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra on
“From the Top” in a performance showing “both fleet fingers and persuasive tempo
flexibility,” according to the Tribune-Review.
At the Cleveland Institute of Music he recently appeared on “Pianofest.” In California he
continues to give concerts with the Young Artist Guild, which awarded him the
Rodestsky and AMRON Jefferson Memorial Scholarships in 2003.
His fourteen years of piano studies, which began at age four, reflect the highest awards
from the Young Musicians Foundation, Los Angeles International Liszt Competition,
Young Artists Peninsula International Music Festival, Glendale Piano Competition,
Southwestern Youth Music Festival Young Pianist, and Music Teachers’ Association of
California (MTAC) Piano Solo and the Piano Concerto State Finals, among others. At
fifteen he placed third at the 2002 Oberlin International Piano Competition with live
internet and radio simulcast.
Martin has served as a young music ambassador through performances with Orange
County’s Pacific Symphony-Chinese American League and the Pacific Symphony’s
Youth Concerts, and as a soloist with the Los Angeles-based Symphony in the Glen,
among others. In 2004 his piano trios played on the MTAC Junior Chamber Music
Series and at the state convention in San Diego.
Martin also won first prizes at both the 2004 Orange County High School and Southern
California High School Chess Championships.
